Christmas is in the air! Thanks to the freezing temperatures, we are all feeling like it’s actually winter, too.
On Monday we read “Mortimer’s Christmas Manger,” by Karma Wilson. Mortimer is a little mouse that is unhappy in his cramped, cold hole. Looking to improve his living conditions, he goes in search of a new place to reside. Soon, he comes across what he considers to be the perfect home, the family nativity set….until he discovers who truly belongs there. After reading this story the children created their own nativity scene using stickers. I also asked them why we celebrate Christmas, as well as what three gifts they would give to baby Jesus. Unfortunately, I forgot to attach them to the nativity scenes before I sent those home. I will still give you their answers, though.
Today we read “The Polar Express,” by Chris Van Allsburg. I love this book! I played up the idea that we were going on an adventure to a magical place that none of us have ever been before. I was the train conductor. We formed a train with our chairs and then I passed out a ticket to each child as they boarded the train. I then went down the aisle and punched each ticket. Next, I read a page or so from the book and then played that same 5 minute clip from the movie. I switched back and forth from the book to the movie 3 different times and it was awesome. The kids loved it. After our chilly adventure to the North Pole, we had hot chocolate and donuts just like the kids on the train in the book. We then used geometric shapes (almost like tangrams) to make a train. This activity was great for the kids. They practiced gluing, visual perceptual, fine motor, and critical thinking skills.
