Dear Preschool Parents,
This week we continued learning about ourselves. On Monday we read, “I’m as Quick as a Cricket,” by Audrey Wood. In this story, a boy mimics different kinds of animals as he compares each to his own character traits. "I'm as quick as a cricket, I'm as slow as a snail. I'm as small as an ant, I'm as large as a whale.” At one point, he is pictured sipping tea formally with a fancy poodle, "I'm as tame as a poodle," and on the very next page he is swinging through trees, "I'm as wild as a chimp”. Whether brave or shy, strong or weak, in the end the young boy celebrates all the different parts of himself. After reading this story, we completed two pages of our “All About Me” books that we will finish up next week.
On Wednesday, we read, “I Like Myself,” by Karen Beaumont. This fun, rhythmical book is about a girl who really likes herself. No matter what she does, wherever she goes, or what others think of her, she likes herself because, as she says, "I'm ME!" We then completed yet another page in our “All About Me” books. Now that we have a foundation and appreciation for ourselves, next week we will move on to talking about ourselves as a class and as friends.
It has been interesting to watch the children during center time these first few weeks of school. Although most of the children flit around the room from one center to the next, I can definitely see which areas and tasks each child tends to gravitate towards. Attention spans are short in the three-year-old class at this point in the year, but that will slowly change as the days and weeks pass and they continue to mature and better understand center time.
